Open Access

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Surgeon General

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Surgeon General, Washington, DC, November 2016 · November 1, 2016

The first Surgeon General's report dedicated to alcohol, drugs and health. It reviews the science of substance use, misuse and addiction across seven chapters: the neurobiology of substance use, misuse and addiction; prevention programs and policies; early intervention, treatment and management of substance use disorders; recovery; health care systems and substance use disorders; and a vision for the future. Key findings include that substance use disorders affected an estimated 20.8 million Americans in 2015 but only about 1 in 10 received treatment; that addiction is a chronic brain disease involving the basal ganglia, extended amygdala and prefrontal cortex; that evidence-based prevention and treatment are effective and cost-saving; that recovery is achievable and sustained by recovery support services; and that integrating substance use care into mainstream health care improves outcomes, reduces costs and addresses disparities.
